Why Do I Have Ants In My Denham Springs, LA Home?

June 15, 2021

Here in Southern Louisiana, our warm, humid climate makes it easy for all kinds of insects to thrive – as evidenced by the number of ant species that call Louisiana home. In our state, we have many nuisance species that invade our homes and businesses, but some ants in our area are more than a nuisance. We’ve got several species that can destroy property, spread disease, and even inflict painful stings. Let’s talk about a few of them and what you can do to keep them off your property.

Common Ants In Louisiana

  • Carpenter Ants – These large black ants live inside the wood, carving tunnels to form living chambers, storage areas, and transportation passageways. This behavior can pose serious dangers to wooden structures, causing thousands of dollars in damage and sometimes putting the integrity of the building itself at risk.
  • Fire Ants – These small red ants pack a nasty punch. They build large outdoor mounds anywhere they deem convenient, and when anything disturbs these mounds, they swarm it, stinging dozens to hundreds of times. This can lead to infection, pain, and anaphylaxis in sensitive individuals.
  • Pavement Ants – While they can sting, these medium-sized brown ants are much less aggressive than fire ants. These nuisance ants like to build their nests in cracks in the pavement, but they’ll also take advantage of cracks in your siding or loose mortar in your brick walls.
  • Pharaoh Ants – These yellowish to light-brown ants are one of the most widely distributed ant species in the world, taking advantage of human travel behavior to spread themselves. Pharaoh ants are infamous disease carriers, known to spread several types of harmful bacteria including salmonella, staph, and strep.
  • Odorous House Ants – These tiny, brown to black ants are another nuisance species. They don’t really pose a threat to people or property, but they stink up your house, releasing a rotten coconut smell when you crush them.

Ant Attractants

There are lots of things that might attract ants to your property, but the primary one is food. Most ant species aren’t picky eaters, and they’ll go for any human food containing sugars, carbs, fats, or proteins – which is pretty much every human food. They’re creative about how they get this food too. In addition to sneaking around your pantry, ants will go for your garbage, the dirty dishes in your sink, your pet food bowls, and even the crumbs on your couch. That’s why proper food storage is the best thing you can do to prevent ants. Take measures like:

  • Cover all indoor and outdoor trash containers with well-fitted lids.
  • Store all pantry foods in airtight containers.
  • Clean used dishes immediately.
  • Never leave pet food bowls or pet foods sitting out – keep them sealed in plastic containers with lids.
  • Vacuum and clean furniture often to remove crumbs.
  • Don’t keep things like cookie plates or fruit bowls sitting out on your kitchen counter.

What To Do About Ant Infestation

Unfortunately, ants are hard to prevent. They can smell food a mile away and they’re so tiny it’s virtually impossible to keep them out of your house. If you get an infestation, it can be tough to get rid of. Ant colonies are vast and complex, and some varieties even have multiple nests and queens to ensure their continuation.
